artists are shut out by banks
Until the next exhibition, the next performance. For artists, income gaps are an unavoidable reality. For fellow artists forced into predatory loans just to afford paint, canvas, and studio rent, proceeds from this artwork become the Seed Fund — extending a fair hand at fair rates.

About the Artist
Park Saenggwang spent most of his life painting in a Japanese-influenced style, but in the final eight years of his career, he achieved an astonishing and bold artistic transformation. He chose quintessentially Korean subjects—the sunrise over Tohamsan Mountain, traditional masks, Dangun (the mythical founder of Korea), the ten longevity symbols, windows, Buddhist statues, dancheong (traditional decorative painting), talismans, and shamans—and pioneered an original technique that combined powerful obangsaek (the five cardinal colors of Korean tradition) with ink wash painting. Through intense color and free compositional structure, Korean indigenous sentiments and national identity emerge with the force of surging life energy. He is acclaimed as a master of colored ink painting who forged a new and original genre in the history of Korean contemporary art.

Park Saeng-gwang: Before the Obangsaek, the Pencil Went First
Park Saeng-gwang (1904–1985) painted shamans and history in obangsaek. The 71 works at SAF are what came before the color — a lifetime of pencil drawings from Jinju to Jeju, Kamakura and India.

Reading the SAF Artists Who Touch Jeju: Four Ways One Island Enters the Work, from Oreum and Jeju Horses to the Relics of April 3, Woodblock and Pencil
Twenty-eight SAF artists mention Jeju in their biographies. Eighteen works show four ways the island enters the work: a photographer born there who shoots oreum at dawn, two artists who photographed and carved the relics of April 3, people who stayed through migration and residencies, the late Park Saeng-kwang who drew waterfalls and a shore in pencil in January 1956, and painters of a cape and a harbour.

Reading the Sea, Rivers, Waterfalls and Snow in SAF Artworks: Fourteen Ways One Water Changes with Oil, Woodblock, Pencil, Thread and Photography
Set fourteen paintings of water side by side and the water runs in fourteen ways: a sea built from horizontal strokes with no horizon, white foam raised from clusters of dots, a black harbour cut with a knife, a beach folded inside a sunflower, a waterfall in a few pencil lines, a snowfield laid down in cotton thread, a snowstorm painted over a photograph. Fourteen works in the SAF online gallery show how material and point of view change one subject.
