A step-by-step guide for first-time art buyers. Where to buy, how much to budget, and how authenticity is guaranteed.
Buying art isn't a grand gesture. It begins the same way hanging a poster begins — picking one original piece you like. This guide walks first-time art buyers through the questions that come up most.
Why Buy Art Now?
Art collecting is no longer confined to the wealthy. Instead of mass-produced interior decor, an original made by a living artist can completely shift the value of a space.
Works by emerging artists are more affordable than most people assume. Prints and art prints start around ₩300,000; small paintings begin near ₩1M.
At SAF Online, one more value is added. When you buy a work here, the revenue becomes a mutual-aid fund for fellow artists facing financial discrimination. That's the reason 127 artists contributed works voluntarily.
Where Can You Buy?
Three main routes.
1. Galleries
You see an exhibition, find a piece you like, and ask the gallerist. Prices are often undisclosed, which can feel intimidating for beginners.
2. Art Fairs
Events like Galleries Art Fair or Art Busan gather multiple galleries. You can browse and compare like shopping — but they run only once or twice a year and require admission.
3. Online Galleries
Prices are transparent and comparison is easy from home. You can zoom into details, check artist profiles and editions at a glance.
At SAF Online, paintings, prints, photography, and sculpture are available across multiple categories. Sort by price, filter by category, search by artist.
Works by Budget
Drop the assumption that "art is expensive." Most works at SAF Online sit between ₩300,000 and ₩5,000,000.
| Budget | Suggested genres | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ₩300K–800K | Prints, art prints, drawings | Edition works at reasonable prices |
| ₩800K–2M | Small paintings, photography, mixed media | Unique works possible |
| ₩2M–5M | Mid-large paintings, Korean painting, sculpture | Pieces that anchor a space |
For a first purchase, starting between ₩300K and ₩1M is recommended. The process of discovering your taste is itself the start of collecting.

Five Criteria for Choosing a Good Work
1. Trust the first impression
You don't need art theory. "I like this" — that instinct matters most. You'll be looking at it every day.
2. Check the artist's trajectory
Exhibition history, awards, and notable collections lend credibility. Each artwork page at SAF Online links directly to the artist's profile and history.
3. Understand editions
- Unique: one of one — highest scarcity
- Limited Edition: a set quantity, each numbered (e.g., 3/30)
- Open Edition: no set quantity — the most affordable option
4. Match size to space
Measure the wall where it will hang. A work covering 60–75% of the wall's width reads as most visually stable. Always check the centimeter dimensions listed on each page.
5. Confirm the guarantee
Every work at SAF Online ships with a Certificate of Authenticity. Because the artists participated directly in the exhibition, there are no counterfeit concerns.
Buying A to Z
The process at SAF Online is simple.
