About the Artist
Yun Gyeom is a painter who translates the sentiments of healing and serenity into oil on canvas. Through works such as 〈Serenity Fortress〉, she unfolds the textures of daily life and inner peace through soft colors and forms. Together with artist Lee Yuji, she has presented two-person exhibitions including 〈1st Track—Healing〉 at Seojeong Art Center (2017) and 〈Exploring Life〉 at GG2 Gallery (2025).
Artist Statement
In a state of deep absorption, I draw lines in regular patterns and repeat the act of opening
and layering, building up a single sculptural image. The artist calls these worlds of imagery,
firmly built between the necessary and the contingent, a 'fortress,' and invites the viewer in.
In the working process, I emphasize the ideas of repetition and immersion, and through them
I work through my own inner conflict and instability. This was something I had to take in—
the phenomena born of light's afterimage from past unstable experiences and visual trauma.
I define myself as a 'precariat' and tie the reality of an unstable laborer to the act of working.
This instability operates as a defining element of life in both material foundation
and psychological territory.
Inspiration drawn from the scenery of nature and from moving creatures gives me a sense
of stability and imagination, and through it I hold many inner images. As I observe the nature
around me, I find myself focusing on how the animals, plants, insects, and small creatures,
in keeping with their living conditions, take just one of nature's materials and build a fortress
of their own. Their own particular camouflage and concealment—their ability to build a safe
fortress fitted to their own environment, and to live and adapt within it.
All of their processes are ways of surviving by protecting themselves. A fortress is at once
my own space for keeping myself firmly intact, and the place toward which I move,
toward an important goal of reaching an ideal. I, too, in the course of a life that requires
a fortress to live within, gather the materials of afterimages drawn through light and give them
the form of lines, building them into the work. My fortress is not yet complete; with the wish
that it will become, little by little, more solid and firm, it is an unfinished fortress
advancing toward the light.
—from the artist's notes
The act of repeatedly drawing lines shows me, who cannot see the world incompletely.
While so absorbed, I fall into a nameless state of self-loss. As lines are drawn and filled in,
a new world that cannot be defined appears on the canvas. This world reveals me, who has
no choice but to see the world differently from others.
The forms that emerge through these utterly simple yet repetitive movements look like
the path of seeking that leads me toward myself. Through line-drawing, or line-tracing,
I explore the sculptural variations of repeated labor. As countless moments of choice
accumulate along the boundary between the necessary and the contingent, the resulting
'pattern of lines' shifts into the inscrutable images of nature—cactus, undersea coral, clouds,
waves, forests, mountain ranges—or into imagery, the unfixed mental image.
