About the Artist
In my work, the "suitcase" is not merely a tool for carrying luggage — it symbolizes a psychological refuge that contains the anxiety and alienation of modern people while guiding them toward a new sense of self. We live on the track of a repetitive daily life, yet everyone carries at least one empty bag of their own, ready to be packed at any moment for departure. Through the imaginary spaces I construct inside suitcases, I seek to console the hardships of reality and hope that viewers can set down the weight of their everyday lives, even briefly, and experience a restorative journey toward themselves.
Artist Statement
Through the recurring form of the suitcase, my work depicts the weight of being one meets along the road of life — and within it, anxiety and excitement, leaving and staying, are layered upon one another. The vivid colors and patterns on the surface of the suitcase, especially, are more than ornament: they are another ideal landscape that has absorbed the texture of the time and feelings I have come through, and they hold a hopeful message. The weight of life is sometimes wearying, but these brilliant visual elements packed inside the bag clearly show the positive energy and the value of being toward which we should aim. The bicycle that appears together with the suitcase is, likewise, a tool that helps the "movement of thought"; through layered planes of color it shows not the rush toward a destination, but the trajectory of "clumsy thoughts" lived through pedal by pedal, stacking up like time. The faceless traveler in the picture is at once anonymous and myself; the steps of those who move between reality and the inner world resemble my own time, willingly carrying the weight of feeling. In the end, the repeated act of pulling a suitcase and pressing the pedal is an attempt to find again the self who keeps fading on the ever-moving map of the heart, and a process of confirming the shape of the time I bear and bring along — and so I am still standing on the road, that brilliant weight on my back.
