About the Artist
Son Jangsub (1941–2021) was a founding member of 'Reality and Utterance,' a group that spearheaded the Minjung (People's) Art movement in the 1980s. Based on a deep affection for history and the lives of ordinary people, combined with an awareness of social reality, he produced series of historical paintings and landscape paintings, constructing his own distinctive landscape painting that merged historical and natural temporalities. His 1980s works exhibit the typical characteristics of Minjung Art, revealing an intense historical consciousness and a spirit of resistance against social contradictions. Through the late 1990s, he continued his historical painting series alongside paintings depicting Korean natural landscapes and the lives of common people. In the 2000s, he embarked on his 'Tree' series and 'Landscape' series, making nature—which has endured in one place through long ages, silently witnessing the sites of history—the protagonist of his work.
